S.O.D.A. Competition Team Guidelines and Requirements

S.O.D.A.’s competition team is a great opportunity for the dedicated dancer who wants to add an extra layer onto their dance experience. Our competition team plans to create everlasting memoires, friendship, and life lessons;

Competition teams are selected and separated by age and ability level.

All dancers must audition for each style of dance in which they show interest in (tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, musical theater). Annual auditions are required.

Student Requirements

-       Must audition in each style of dance you’re interested in; tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, musical theater.

-       Must be dedicated to themselves, their team members, and their teachers (this includes showing up to all classes, extra practices, rehearsals, competitions (including awards), parades, performances etc. (2 absences allowed from each competition class (Sept-Dec, Jan-June),

-       Must be respectful to themselves, their team members, their teachers, and competitors

-       Must be responsible for themselves (prepared for dance), their dance work (choreography, costumes, schedule, etc.) and their school work (we love good grades!).

-       Must maintain a positive attitude.

-       Must wear competition team warm up suit to all competitions (arriving, departing, as a costume cover up, and onstage at awards).

 

Parent/Guardian Requirements

-       Pay all fees on or before due dates.

-       Volunteer throughout the dance season when needed.

-       Must make sure dancer(s) arrive to classes, competitions, conventions, rehearsals, etc. on time.

-       Must be respectful towards all dancers, fellow dance parents/guardians, and

teachers (both from S.O.D.A. and other studios).

  

Audition Information

Dancers do not need to prepare choreography for their audition. Dancers will arrive to the studio on audition day, prepared, and ready for a class. During the audition, dancers will warm up, go across the floor, do some center work, and learn a combination.

 

Costume, Competition and Convention Fees

Competition costume fees are due by September 1st. Competition costumes are ordered as early as possible. Competition costumes are $100.00 each.

Competition and convention fees are due before winter break. Competition -fees vary; approximately $45.00-$65.00 per group, $65.00-$80.00 per duo/trio, $110.00-$125.00 per solo. Convention fees vary; approximately $250.00-$350.00. Competition fees can be paid by cash or check only.

Competition/convention fees will be e-mailed to parents late summer/early fall.

 

Warm Up Suits

Personalized warm up suits samples can be found at the studio. They are non-refundable so we highly recommend having your child try on both the jacket and pants before ordering. Suits are $110.00 and come with the jacket (name included on the front, SODA logo on the back) and pants.

 

Competition Weekends

Competition performance schedules are not released to studios until 7-10 days prior to the event. As soon as the information is released, parents will receive an e-mail with the schedule. Until the final schedule is e-mailed, competition families must block the entire weekend off.

 

Solos, Duos, Trios, Specialty Groups

If we believe your child is ready to for specialty number (solo, duo, trio, or specialty group), you will be notified with your acceptance to the team (post auditions). Specialty numbers will be offered to attend more than the required 3 competitions. Specialty fees vary by number of dancers.

 

Pre-Competition Team Breakdown:
Age 6-7

Pre-Competition S.O.D.A. dancers compete at 1 regional competition (late winter/spring). They are encouraged to take a convention as well.

All Pre-Competition dancers are required to take:

-       1 Ballet class (Ballet I)

-       1 Pre-competition class

-       1 Recreation class (in the same style as their competition class)

-       Dancers are highly encouraged to take multiple styles of recreational dance classes to qualify for competition auditions the following year (ex: if your child did not make, or did not audition for, pre-competition Hip Hop, your child should still take recreational Hip Hop I to qualify for our 2022-2023 team auditions).

 

Mini Competition Team Breakdown:
Age 7-10

Mini S.O.D.A. dancers compete at a minimum of 3 regional competitions (late winter/spring) and 1 national competition (summer 2022). They will attend a minimum of 1 convention per season.

All Mini dancers are required to take:

-       2 Ballet classes (Ballet I & Ballet Technique I/II)

-       Mini Competition Technique

-       Competition classes

-       Recreational classes (in the same styles as their competition classes)

-       Dancers are highly encouraged to take multiple styles of recreational dance classes to qualify for competition auditions the following year (ex: if your child did not make, or did not audition for, Mini Hip Hop competition, your child should still take recreational Hip Hop I to qualify for our 2022-2023 team auditions).

 

Junior Competition Team Breakdown:
Age 10-13

Junior S.O.D.A. dancers compete at a minimum of 3 regional competitions (late winter/spring) and 1 national competition (summer 2022). They will attend a minimum of 1 convention per season.

All Junior dancers are required to take:

-       2 Ballet classes (Ballet II & Ballet Technique I/II or Ballet Technique II/III depending on the dancer’s level)

-       Junior Competition Technique

-       Competition classes

-       Recreational classes (in the same styles as their competition classes)

-       Dancers are highly encouraged to take multiple styles of recreational dance classes to qualify for competition auditions the following year (ex: if your child did not make, or did not audition for, Junior Hip Hop competition, your child should still take recreational Hip Hop II to qualify for our 2022-2023 team auditions).

 

Teen/Senior Competition Team Breakdown:
Age 13-15, Age 15-18

Teen/Senior S.O.D.A. dancers compete at a minimum of 3 regional competitions (late winter/spring) and 1 national competition (summer 2022). They will attend a minimum of 1 convention per season.

All Teen/Senior dancers are required to take:

-       2 Ballet classes (Ballet III & Ballet Technique II/III)

-       Mini Competition Technique

-       Competition classes

-       Recreational classes (in the same styles as their competition classes)

-       Dancers are highly encouraged to take multiple styles of recreational dance classes to qualify for competition auditions the following year (ex: if your child did not make, or did not audition for, Teen/Senior Hip Hop competition, your child should still take recreational Hip Hop III to qualify for our 2022-2023 team auditions).

4:15pm-4:45pm: Jazz (ages 6+)
4:45pm-5:15pm: Tap (ages 6+)
5:15pm-5:45pm: Musical Theater (ages 6+)
5:45pm-6:15pm: Hip Hop (ages 6+)
6:15pm-6:45pm: Lyrical (ages 6+)
